Sail the Murray like royalty aboard the PS Murray Princess. This seven-day tour is for those who would like to see the Murray River, one of Australia’s greatest natural treasures, in style. You will see over 300 kilometres of Australia’s most interesting historic river, and stop at South Australia’s famous wine-making region, the Barossa valley, for a full-day tour.
Climb aboard the PS Murray on a Friday and sail away from all your troubles. Your tour is kickstarted in Mannum, the birthplace of Murray river trade and communications. You will enjoy a welcome dinner with the captain and crew as you head downriver to your overnight mooring at Mundarra. This is a great opportunity to look for nocturnal wildlife from the deck or join the entertainment for a dance.
On Saturday morning, you can join a guided tour of Murray Bridge, the thriving township built on the banks of the Murray in 1879, when the first bridge across the Murray was built at the historic site. By Saturday afternoon you will be exploring Salt Bush Flat, where you can inspect the wheelhouse with the Captain. More entertainment befitting a princess on Saturday night will have you dancing in the aisles.
Sunday morning’s nature walk will get your blood flowing in the clean, brisk air of the Murray. See Fromm’s Landing from the paddlewheeler and be awed by the sheer cliff-face of 90 metre cliffs and majestic river gorges, before transferring to a discovery vessel for a wildlife tour. In small groups, you will get up close and personal with the egrets and herons that feed their young on the banks of the river’s muddy water.
Your next major stop will be the ‘valley of the vine’, where you will explore the source of Australia’s most well-loved wines. In the Barossa Valley, you will visit two premium wineries and the music will continue for those who have indulged during the day and want to dance the night away.
Relax as the PS Murray Princess sails you through the historic townships of Blanchetown, then a guided tour of the Burk Salter vineyards, before heading to the historic town of Swan Reach which was established in 1850 as the largest sheep and cattle station in the region. Once you’ve had a taste of the sheering life, it’s time to see it up close and enjoy the Woolshed Show at Sunnydale.
A historic nature walk will please those who want to be at one with the call of the wild, or you can get up close in a dragon-fly flat bottomed boat, that will take you silently onto the crystal waters where you will morph with the scenery enough to hear the flap of wings. You can visit the local Native Wildlife Shelter and see some of Australia’s most colourful characters as they recuperate from injury.
Step back tens of thousands of years in time to explore one of Australia’s most significant historical sites and see the ancient rock carvings at the Ngaut Ngaut Aboriginal Reserve. If you’re an adventure seeker, you can take a speed boat ride on the way back. Dress up and enjoy a night of dancing and dining at the Captain’s Dinner and Dance as a special farewell on the last night, before docking at Mannum Wharf on Friday morning.
